General Course Information
Koi Keepers enrolling in this course will become familiar with:
- What to have in a Koi health kit and why
- How to conduct and interpret the necessary water quality tests
- A basic understanding of how Koi Anatomy and Physiology affects heath
- How to properly examine Koi, including the use of a microscope and anesthesia
- How to properly treat Koi for a variety of ailments, including step-by-step procedures for ulcers, tail and fin rot, raised scales, repairing wounds and spit fins, among many others
- How to recognize the parasites that affect Koi and how to use medications
- How to determine what the problem is
All students will need a copy of the text "Step by Step Koi Diagnosis & Treatment" by Duncan Griffiths. The book is available at the K.O.I web site:

The Diagnosis and Treatment Course will take the student through many techniques of Koi medicine to include helpful do's and don'ts. The Course covers diagnosis of Koi diseases and effective and timely treatment that reduces morbidity and prevents death. The student will learn how diagnostic tools - microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests - and treatment chemicals - allow effective case management.
Very good course but time consuming since you need to read the entire manual.
Enjoyed completing this course, it was a lot of work, but it was worthwhile because I learned a great deal. Fact that you have to delve around for answers makes it interesting and helps you study more in-depth.
Great course - so much practical information that I have not seen elsewhere. The manual is a great reference which I will be consulting for many years. The assignments and final exam were designed to make me think and by the time I finished them, I found myself really familiar with all the course materials. Next time I come upon a sick fish I will actually know what to do and what steps to take, but hopefully they won't be my fish because I now realize, more than ever, the importance of keeping a healthy environment for the Koi.
Duncan Griffiths has put a lot into this course and he has made me work to assimilate the materials, but it was well worth it. The assignments were practical and very much like real life situations. When I was stuck with any problem and reached out to him for help, he was generous with his answers. Emails, assignments and exam were always returned promptly.
It's a good idea if you are planning to do this course, to make sure that you have some time to devote to the assignments because Duncan puts a due date on each one. I liked that because I work better under a bit of pressure and it helped to really move things along. I also read through the book (manual) once before beginning the course and I found this a very useful way to gain some familiarity with the materials. I found his writing style very down to earth and often entertaining.
In my opinion, this was the best and most practical course that I have taken so far with K.O.I.
Tests & Completion
The course text is a book entitled Diagnosis and Treatment by Duncan Griffiths. You will need to borrow or purchase a copy. It is for sale in the K.O.I. store. There will be 4 assignments which will require elementary math and the application of the material you have learned. A written test will be given at the end of the course.
In general the course will be conducted on a self-paced basis and students can ask questions any time via emails to the instructor.
Questions can be e-mailed to the instructor at: (email address will be provided to enrolled students).
If a student requests that certain information be kept confidential, then it will be re-phrased and presented it to the class, if pertinent, but will respect the anonymity of the student.
Everyone that works hard is expected to complete the course. To complete this course, all assignments must have satisfactory answers and students must achieve a 100% score on the final exam within 12 months of the first instructor contact.
Students will be given every reasonable opportunity to understand the answers to the exam questions. Students will be prompted for a more complete answer if their first attempt is insufficient. A score of 100% will be required to pass this course.
The K.O.I. policy in regards to the student code of conduct is clear. Cheating will not be tolerated. Students will be failed if they cheat. For those seeking certification, cheating or serious legal violations (relative to the activities with K.O.I.) will be grounds for non-certification or decertification.

Course Sign Up
Once you have purchased a course individually or as a certification package, you can expect:
1. The store website will send you an email confirming your purchase
2. KOI Student Coordinator will send you an email regarding KOI courses
3. Instructor(s) for each course will send you an email regarding courses you have purchased.
4. For a package of courses (e.g. 9-course CKK package), courses can be taken in any order. Respond to the Instructor’s email for the course you want to start with. As you finish each course, respond to the instructor’s email for each consecutive course. Optionally you can take more than one course at a time, communicating by email with the Instructors.
5. The reading material for each course will be either:
downloaded from the KOI website – follow the download instructions in the email you receive from the instructor, or;
for some courses a you will receive a book from the KOI store shortly after your purchase.
