Course Description:
Water Quality is probably the single, most important aspect to grasp in order to become a keeper of healthy and prospering Koi. The purpose of this course is to instruct the student on how to acquire quality water, how to perform proper testing, how to understand test results, and how to properly react to test results. Learning about water quality and water clarity aren’t the same. Crystal clear water can contain compounds that are deadly to your fish.

Lots of math, but I guess that is expected in pond since there is a lot of calculations needed to ensure you are adding the appropriate medicines and chemicals to pond. So it took me longer in this module as I am not a math wizard, but writer does help you along.

This course really made me think and helped me learn a lot. I also had to do some research to come up with some of the answers on the test. It helped me learn even more, and I ran across even more information that wasn't on the test. The math portion was tough for me, but not impossible. Now that I get it, I find myself testing my understanding by coming up with scenarios and trying out the math formulas to check my results. I highly recommend this course to anyone with a pond. Water quality is the key to success.

This was an intensive course that was well worth the time, you can not rush through this section as water quality is key to having a healthy pond for the koi. There is a lot of math involved so you may have to review several times before getting it right, but the instructor is helpful and quick to respond.

Tests & Completion

Assignments and Tests:
The course text is an Adobe Acrobat document entitled Water Quality by Norm Meck. There will be additional reading assignments for the course. A written test will be given at the end of the course via email. Please contact the instructor by email when you are ready for the test.

How to plan for the construction of a Koi pond, to include pond ownership issues as well as selecting the pond’s location, volume and shape.
Numerous design issues, such as a fail-safe design, flow rates through a filtration system, beneficial pond currents, aeration and water changes.
Numerous pond construction concepts, such as building a shell that has structural integrity, the pros and cons of various shell materials, filter construction and installation, plumbing, pumps, electrical systems, water entrance and egress devices, and water conditioning devices,

Course Description:
Pond construction design concepts have been an ever evolving science since the first hobbyist built the first pond. That would have been a so called natural pond with no filtration. The combination of plants and fish in an artificial body of water was supposed to work. After a few fatalities, a better design was sought. Trying to emulate an aquarium with gravel bottom filtration did not work much better. Over the decades we are where we are today. This course covers what we believe to be the most up-to-date information on the topic. Three phases of the pond building process are covered in this course – Planning, Designing, and Construction. Each of these includes numerous topics that should be understood before the first dollar is spent on the significant investment of building a Koi pond. This training module will help with understanding the decision processes involved in pond building and will provide insight to the trade-offs and options that should be considered.

I liked this course very much! The three chapters helped make understanding each component of pond building specialized and focused. It would be fun to have a 'super pond', best practices portion of the test, but I guess that is what we try to do without ponds, make them the best they can be. Very well written and not too complex but contains the right graphs and tables to help calculate all the target flows and loss by friction. I learned so much information in this chapter. I like that the exam was broken up into 3 tests to not be overwhelming. Ken is great and responds back quickly.

The course material is a document written by Ken Austin entitled Koi Pond Construction. The course will be divided into 3 reading assignments, with a quiz for each assignment:
Planning - pages 1 - 14: Assignment 1

This is a self-paced course. There will be an exam at the end of each assignment. The exams can be taken at any time but all the exams must be completed within the 12 months allowed for the course. Email a request to the instructor a request for an exam and it will be sent to you.

Course Description:
Our ponds are a limited volume of water. In order to successfully sustain, in a healthy condition, a large number of koi, we have to re-cycle that water through filters (devices used to remove solids) and bioconverters (devices remove chemicals). The purpose of the Filtration Course is to provide the concepts of the pond equipment used to remove the unwanted substances such as carbon dioxide, solids and nitrogen waste products then adding in vital oxygen. This course provides information on the ever evolving filtration and bioconverter technology without promoting a specific design concept. This course will cover the essential maintenance of filters and bioconverters and will help students develop an ability to analyze pond filtration problems.

This course covered all aspects of filtration, in depth, and was very helpful. I would have liked more info on rotary drum filters.

This was a fun course that had all of the necessary information in the text, no looking around for answers elsewhere. The scenarios at the end of the test were good practice, but the photos did not come through. I found out that there are photos for the observations in the questions later, but I still could finish the test with the info provided. A very thorough, informative course.

Lots of good information, definitely learned a lot in this chapter and can put this to use in my own pond. Great writer and responds back with test results quickly.

I found it very helpful — easy to understand information.

This material is excellent, helpful, interesting, and well-organized. I thought it included enough info to get us started, but still was brief enough to easily move through.

As far as a constructive suggestion, I think it could be interesting to add a "Definition of Key Words" section, whether it is one for each course pertaining to the terms in that course, or a more comprehensive list of defined key words. Although I have somewhat of a scientific background, I was not sure what "caudal" meant until I went online searching for the word. Of course, once I knew what it meant, it made several places in this material much easier to comprehend, including one of the test questions.

I really appreciate that the instructor reached out with an initial email right after I signed up, including the test, and he graded and returned the test the same day with some personal feedback. That is great!

The course was very thorough. Right from the start you begin learning. The interesting thing for me was the difference between fish and the human body.

I found this section straightforward and a good starting point.

This course was comprehensive and thorough. I felt, though, that some of the information asked in the test was not covered enough in the study guide. I found the information that was needed to answer these questions was located in the next course. This course taught me to really analyze each question before answering.

This course was very helpful in identifying all the parts of a koi and how their systems function.

This is a good starter course for building on, it gives a good basic understanding of Koi anatomy, the test was relevant to the study material and the questions skipped around out of order from the study guide and were worded in a way to make the test challenging enough to make you think a bit instead of just searching for obvious answers. Spike is awesome, quick to respond and friendly!

Course Description:
Physiology, in contrast to anatomy, is the study of the body in its entirety and how the various components of the body interact to make the organism function as a whole. In Koi Physiology, the student will learn how all the bodily components of a Koi function and the effects of how outside influences occur on systems within the Koi. Because the study of physiology necessitates an understanding of the function of individual components of the body (anatomy), the studies of anatomy and physiology are inter-related.

I really enjoyed reading this section. All my life I've been surrounded by fish, either aquariums or sport fishing. To find out and share the way that fish release most ammonia was of great interest.

I found this chapter a little more challenging than the Anatomy yet i still learned alot even though I got 9 wrong the first round. On the second round I only missed one. Lots of useful information, very well laid out.

Great course - so much practical information that I have not seen elsewhere. The manual is a great reference which I will be consulting for many years. The assignments and final exam were designed to make me think and by the time I finished them, I found myself really familiar with all the course materials. Next time I come upon a sick fish I will actually know what to do and what steps to take, but hopefully they won't be my fish because I now realize, more than ever, the importance of keeping a healthy environment for the Koi.

Duncan Griffiths has put a lot into this course and he has made me work to assimilate the materials, but it was well worth it. The assignments were practical and very much like real life situations. When I was stuck with any problem and reached out to him for help, he was generous with his answers. Emails, assignments and exam were always returned promptly.

It's a good idea if you are planning to do this course, to make sure that you have some time to devote to the assignments because Duncan puts a due date on each one. I liked that because I work better under a bit of pressure and it helped to really move things along. I also read through the book (manual) once before beginning the course and I found this a very useful way to gain some familiarity with the materials. I found his writing style very down to earth and often entertaining.
In my opinion, this was the best and most practical course that I have taken so far with K.O.I.

All students will need a working email address, internet access to the K.O.I. website, a microscope with at least the ability to magnify up to 100 times (microscopes with three magnifications, 40x, 100x and 400x capabilities, are recommended), a weight scale with the ability to weigh to 0.01 grams, a drop-type water test kit (for ammonia), a Koi net and a Koi tub (aka, a Koi bowl). You may email the Lab Part 1 instructor for recommendations on microscopes and scales.

Course Description:
Part 1 - A DVD provides the first part of a two-part lab course. The DVD format was chosen for practical reasons. We believed attending an in-person lab would be somewhere between inconvenient to cost prohibitive for most students.   At the time of this writing, we have students that reside literally thousands of miles apart; one even outside the US (and across the pond!).   With this and part 2’s online format, students won’t have to buy a plane ticket, spend money on a hotel room and meals in restaurants to attend this lab. With the money saved, students could likely buy a nice microscope, a good digital scale and pay for the entire CKK curriculum of courses if they were so inclined.

It’s worth noting that the DVD portion of the course is not a shopping list offering multiple ways to do various things. The video shows, by example, one good way to do each of the subjects covered. It is believed if students learn and understand one basic and usable technique, they can be immediately effective and expand their knowledge of options later.

Part 2 - The second part of this course will be an online seminar (webinar or something similar) where students and instructor(s) participate in reviewing case studies. This is intended to sharpen the students’ detective skills and teach a systematic way to problem solve. And like Part 1, it required no travel.

Part 1 - There will be assignments associated with the materials supplied and written responses will be required. The assignments will require use of a microscope, use of a scale for weighing chemicals, fish handling, sample taking and performance of various tests.   The required written responses will be descriptions and evaluations of the assignments.

Our ponds are a limited volume of water. In order to successfully sustain, in a healthy condition, a large number of Koi, we have to re-cycle that water through filters (devices used to remove solids) and bioconverters (devices that remove chemicals). Koi are transported for many reasons, and doing it correctly involves preparation and an understanding of the factors involved. Too often, Koi become ill after transport, and many things are blamed when the primary cause was a lack of understanding of the stressors involved at each step in the process. Every effort must be made to minimize stress each time the Koi are handled. Proper equipment and supplies are discussed and methods are recommended to assure that Koi arrive at their destination in the best possible condition. Alternatives must be weighed at each step so that the health of the Koi can be maximized. This module is based on an article originally written by Syd Mitchell which expands on the Anoxic Filtration book written by Dr Kevin Novak PhD who developed the system over many years before recommending it as a DIY system that would overcome the drawbacks of conventional filtration. Anoxic filtration systems are simple to build and relatively inexpensive when compared with the cost of ready-made conventional filter systems. A correctly set up anoxic system gives near zero ammonia and nitrite readings as would be expected from a good biofiltration system and also will give very low or even near zero nitrate readings too.

Many of the problems encountered with Koi are caused by poor nutrition or improper feeding. In this course, you will learn about nutrition in general, and the specifics of feeding Koi in particular, in order to assist you in the often difficult challenge of keeping Koi well nourished and growing. Course Description:
One of the most frequent problems experienced by all Koi Keepers is bacterial infections. Even the most meticulously cared for outdoor pond may suffer from bacteria introduced by bird droppings, frogs or other sources that are not under the Koi keeper's control. The goal of this course is for Koi Keepers to become familiar with diagnosing bacterial infections, and methods of treating bacterial infections.

One of the most entertaining and hands-on aspects of the course includes learning to prepare a bacterial slide including stains, and then looking at that bacteria under a microscope. While your own microscopy will not allow species identification of bacteria, you will be able to confirm that it's there.

Course Description:
NOTICE. This course is ONLY available as part of the Show Water Quality Specialist Certification program.

Students applying for the Show Water Quality Internship must have already passed the other four courses required to become a K.O.I. Show Water Quality Specialist. The purpose of the Internship is to give instructors an opportunity to access the student’s knowledge by observing their ability to apply their knowledge in real-life situation. The student will be under the tutelage and guidance of a qualified Instructor. The students pretend they are in charge of the Water Quality for the show, and do all appropriate water testing to demonstrate their knowledge to the instructor. As part of their simulated job, students will also observe the management of the show and the safety and biosecurity protocols in place. The Student and Instructor may actually run Water Quality at a Koi Show. Koi Show chairpersons that would like to request that a Water Quality team be provided by K.O.I. for their show should contact Karen Pattist (pattist@snet.net).

The student must bear their own expense for the purpose of the Internship.

If the Koi Show has less than 100 Koi entered, an Internship student may be asked to intern at a second Koi Show before becoming Certified.

After passing the Internship, the student will achieve Certification as a K.O.I. Koi Show Water Quality Specialist, and will have demonstrated the capacity to be solely responsibility for the water quality at Koi shows.

Submit ten photos to the instructor that you believe are among your best photos, following these guidelines:

A. All of the photos should be taken AFTER you begin this course.

B. None of the photos should be retouched by computer (that is a different class/subject).

C. Each photo should be of a different from the other 9 you submit (not multiple angles from the same photographic session, for example). Some of them can be photos that resulted from trying the various suggested exercises, but none of them have to be. If you submit a related series of photos (“how to” illustrations), they count together as one of your ten photos.

D. At least five of the ten should have something to do with ponds, fish, or the hobby.

E. With each photo, please submit a brief (1-3 paragraph) written analysis of that photo:

i. Please only submit photos and commentary that are o.k. with you to post for other students. As a class, all of us can benefit by reading the self-evaluation of others about their photos. (Any photos/commentary shared with the class will be done at the discretion of the instructor, but some photos from a few students may be selected to share, and therefore, by submitting your photos for this class, you are giving permission to share them with other students).

ii. Your written evaluation of each photo should refer to at least two (more is preferable) of the most relevant principles described in this course. For example, you might comment on the focus, the contrast, the shutter speed, the placement of the subject in the frame, the time of day or use of light, etc. Many of the photos in this course are accompanied by the type (and approximate length) of commentary/analysis that the instructor is hoping you will provide with each of the ten photos you submit.

iii. Any photo that includes a human being must be accompanied by a simple model release form if it is to be shared with your classmates or on the K.O.I. website. You can find a simple model release form on the web.

iv. Please provide both constructive criticisms of your own photo (ways you think you could have made it better) and also statements about the strengths of the photo.

v. In at least one of your commentaries, please state why you took the photo, and what you plan to do with it (make a poster, use it in your Koi pond journal, put it on a business card, etc.)

F. For ease of communication, please group your photos when you submit them to the instructor into two different submissions, each containing five photos. You may submit more than ten photos to the instructor during the course as a basis for other questions or conversation, but clearly identify your official ten submitted photos. The instructor will focus time and energy on your ten photos, and may or may not have the opportunity to offer detailed responses to additional submissions.

There are suggested exercises or photographic experiments sprinkled throughout the text (in red typeface). These exercises are NOT required in order to pass. They are simply intended to help you explore something new in a fun way. Try out the ones that appeal to you, or ignore them—that is up to you. Generally speaking, you will learn more if you spend time with a camera in your hand than you will merely reading about having a camera in your hand.

This course is open to any Koi Keeper that wants to learn more about how a Koi Show handles all the Koi and maintains perfect water quality throughout the Show. This is an intermediate level course that is part of the K.O.I. Show Water Quality Specialist Certification, but may be taken as a stand-alone course. Some math will be required.

Learning how to properly handle Koi and maintain water quality at a Koi Show is something that may be of interest to every Koi keeper, even though they may never show their Koi. Excellent water quality is maintained through the use of chemicals (rather than filters) at a Koi show, and the techniques and practices involved are ideal for whenever Koi require short term (less than a month) quarantine. Proper netting and bowling whenever Koi need to be handled is key to reducing stress in Koi, which can lead to sickness and even death. Learning to diagnose and treat issues occurring during transport may be of use to every Koi keeper that purchases fish and brings them home.
