General Course Information
This course is desiged to further your knowledge about bacteria and is intended only as education. We do not expect that this course will give you the tools to accurately identify or treat any bacterial infection. The correct diagnosis should be ascertained by taking a swab and sending it a laboratory for a Culture and Sensitivity Analysis. Swab mailing kits may be obtained from your veterinarian or veterinarian supply. Any antibiotics required to treat a bacterial infection must be obtained from a licensed veterinarian.
Koi Keepers enrolling on this course will become familiar with:
- An overview of bacterial infections
- Using a microscope and staining slides to see bacteria
- Working with bacteria
- Common bacterial diseases of Koi
- Making a preliminary diagnosis
- Control and treatment of bacterial disease
All students will need an email address and internet access to the K.O.I. website
One of the most frequent problems experienced by all Koi Keepers is bacterial infections. Even the most meticulously cared for outdoor pond may suffer from bacteria introduced by bird droppings, frogs or other sources that are not under the Koi keeper's control. The goal of this course is for Koi Keepers to become familiar with diagnosing bacterial infections, and methods of treating bacterial infections.
One of the most entertaining and hands-on aspects of the course includes learning to prepare a bacterial slide including stains, and then looking at that bacteria under a microscope. While your own microscopy will not allow species identification of bacteria, you will be able to confirm that it's there.
KOI #315 is a seven week course with regular weekly assignments, and is intended to be completed within 8 weeks. It is only taught a few times a year, so enrolled students will be notified of the next start date.
