General Course Information
Koi Keepers enrolling in this course will become familiar with:
- The basics of Koi Nutrition
- Proteins and Amino Acids
- Fats and Carbohydrates
- Vitamins and Minerals
- Colour Enhancers, Immune Stimulants, Spawning and Egg Binding
- Ration Selection and Feeding
All students will need an email address and internet access to the K.O.I. website.
This is the Advanced Koi Nutrition Course and will go into detail about topics introduced in Course #204. Course #204 is highly recommended as a pre-requisite for this course.
KOI #314 is a seven week course with regular weekly assignments, and is intended to be completed within 8 weeks. It is only taught a few times a year, so enrolled students will be notified of the next start date.
Many of the problems encountered with Koi are caused by poor nutrition or improper feeding. In this course, you will learn about nutrition in general, and the specifics of feeding Koi in particular, in order to assist you in the often difficult challenge of keeping Koi well nourished and growing. You begin the course with the basics of fish nutrition so you will learn to understand how very different it is to feed fish compared to feeding yourself or your dog. You then advance to the specifics of Koi rations, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and the various feed additives that are available. Practical guidance in choosing a diet and feeding it correctly will be provided.
This is the most amazing course, full of debunked myths about what Koi should eat. It should be a MUST for all hobbyists who keep Koi!
Tests & Completion
The course text is a document entitled Advanced Koi Nutrition by Syd Mitchell. There are 6 assignmens and a written test.
In general the course will be conducted on a self-paced basis and students can ask questions any time via emails to the instructor.

If a student requests that certain information be kept confidential, then it may be re-phrased and presented to the class, if pertinent, but will respect the anonymity requests of the student.
To complete the course, assignments and the final exam must be emailed to the instructor by the specified dates. If additional time is desired, you must arrange this with the instructor. To complete this course, students must provide satisfactory answers on all exams within 12 months of the first instructor contact.
It is the intention of K.O.I. to provide an email warning to the student if the course is incomplete and their tuition is about to expire provided.
The course must be completed within 12 months of the date the student was initially contacted by the instructor. Special exemptions may apply if the 12 months have expired. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
If additional time is desired, 12-month extensions may be purchased for $25 for a single course or $50 for multiple courses. Students may request extensions from their Student Coordinator prior to the expiration of the time originally allotted to complete their course(s). If the student qualifies, the Student Coordinator will issue instructions on how to buy the extension at the K.O.I. Store.
Students will be given every reasonable opportunity to understand the answers to the exam questions. Students will be prompted for a more complete answer if their first attempt is insufficient. A score of 100% will be required to pass this course.
The K.O.I. policy in regards to the student code of conduct is clear. Cheating will not be tolerated. Students will be failed if they cheat. For those seeking certification, cheating or serious legal violations (relative to the activities with K.O.I.) will be grounds for non-certification or de-certification.
