Re-oxygenation after anoxia induces brain cell death and memory loss in the anoxia-tolerant crucian carp
This reseach gives "frozen fish" a whole new meaning. My wonder is if the Crucian Carp's cousin the koi is able to revive the same? For those loving a scientific article, you will love this.
Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) survive without oxygen for several months, but it is unknown whether they are able to protect themselves from cell death normally caused by the absence, and particularly return, of oxygen....
Consequently, the overall objective of the present study was to examine whether anoxic and re-oxygenated crucian carp suffer from cell death in the brain accompanied by detrimental effects at the behavioral level, or whether the fish protects its brain against cell death during exposure to anoxia and re-oxygenation."
