Have you ever wanted to clean the bottom of a q-tank (or sick tank, or holding tank) without emptying the tank?

One of the hard facts of life is that if you turn a hose on in your pond to add water and walk away, you will forget it and probably kill some fish. Yeah, this is not literally true but it hopefully gets the point across that if you leave a hose running in your pond, you'll almost certainly eventually forget it and kill some fish.

We've talked about it before in this blog - but here's more proof that water treatment plants are unable to deal with some of the chemicals found in the water, and that they are affecting our fish.  If you are using 'city' water in your pond, this article should be of interest to you.  And what about those of us using 'well water' in our ponds - there are no treatment plants for us?  Makes you think, especially as our Koi are long-lived pets...

More than once I've heard "take care of the water and the water takes care of the Koi." That sure sounds good, but truly understanding the Nitrogen Cycle had baffled me until I took the K.O.I. Certified Koi Keeper course.

Ever wonder how our Koi can manage in such a wide range of temperatures and pH, and find food in opaque water?  A new study shows that high genetic diversity is the key.

At least that seems to be the results of one studey.  Upgrades to a wastewater treatment plant along Ontario's Grand River led to a 70 per cent drop in fish that have both male and female characteristics within one year and a full recovery of the fish population within three years, according to researchers at the University of Waterloo.

All fish, including our Koi are experts at evading danger by schooling and coordinating their movements..  Learn more about this evolutionary advantage by clicking on the picture or title.

We all know that a pH crash is caused by pond water acidification, which can have many causes and many effects.  Imagine the effects of ocean acidification - read the article by clicking on the picture or title.
