Water - Water Quality, Algae, Transport, Cohabitation with Other Species

A reminder to never release any pet fish into a river, stream or lake.

ROBBINSDALE, Minn. — Creatures of the night vary at Crystal Lake in Robbinsdale, and on Tuesday night going into Wednesday morning, the party included humans.

Jordan Wein and his team from WSB, an environmental consulting firm, geared up for the hunt. They put on waders and sprayed themselves down with bug spray.

For our science minded friends!

...The study reveals the details of important nutrient exchanges between algae and bacteria. Such exchanges determine the functioning of microbial communities in the environment, relevant to climate change cycles and agricultural productivity. Microbial interactions within microbial communities are important on many levels, ranging from the ecology of aquatic and terrestrial food webs, to wastewater treatment. A key characteristic of the interactions within these communities is the exchange of nutrients between species.

Cyanobacteria May be coming soon to your pond, via the clouds!

Human health and ecosystems could be affected by microbes including cyanobacteria and algae that hitch rides in clouds and enter soil, lakes, oceans and other environments when it rains, according to a Rutgers co-authored study.

A great short review of pharmaceutical contamination on fish. Our waters are becoming polluted with human drugs and this study looked at the possible results.

Fish species around the globe are at risk due to the ever-increasing levels of pharmaceutical contamination that is making its way into water systems, according to collaborative research conducted by The University of Western Australia, Monash University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and New York University.

Depending where you live in the world, your pond will have different critters that can been seen if you look close.  Here are some from Britain.

Summer is a time to leave your pond and its wildlife in peace. However, by looking at your pond at night, you might be surprised at what creatures come out when the sun goes down.

A noted downside to keeping both koi and goldfish together.

The eye-attacking behaviour of Koi fishes was recorded in a koi–goldfish polyculture system. The attacked fishes suffered from eye ablation, abnormal swimming and suppressed feeding behaviour. There was a significant difference in mean sizes of victims and attackers but the exact motivating stimuli for the observed action was not clear. For future research, the effects of different stocking ratios on aggressive behaviour of koi should also be examined.

Humans have been the only known species to domesticate other animals - until now.

In our new study, we describe what appears to be first example of a non-human vertebrate domesticating another animal...

Okay, will someone tell me how to make this food.

Veterinarians from RUDN University have developed a way to increase the resistance of carp, the most common fish in fish farms, to the harmful effects of ammonia, which is found in almost all water bodies. The researchers found that the amino acid arginine added to fish food can be helpful. The results are published in the journal Aquaculture.

I so want to make one of these ecosystems for my home. Here is a video on how to do.

Yes, these black swans really look like they are sharing their food. Check out this 1 minute, 9 seconds youtube.
